Scientific name: Phaseolus vulgaris L.

Common name: Bean

General description: The evolutionary origin of the bean and its first diversification is said to have occurred in the Americas and spread everywhere following the migratory routes of the prehistoric era.

Beans, together with pumpkin and maize form the so-called 'three sisters', which are the main crops of several indigenous groups of the Americas, in which the plants are interdependent: maize serves as a stalk for the growth of beans, this in turn provides the nitrogen to the soil that the other two need and finally pumpkin covers the soil, hiding it, preventing the growth of competing weeds and creating a microclimate that retains moisture in the soil. The pumpkin's hairy stems also help keep pests away.
